
Joseph W. (Rick) Richmond, Jr. has a transactional and relationship legal practice which primarily emphasizes the areas of real estate, estate planning, trust and estates administration, and business law. He is a senior partner, having practiced with the firm since 1971. Mr. Richmond is a graduate of Episcopal High School and Washington and Lee University (B.S. 1966). He received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law (J.D. 1971), after serving in the U.S. Army where he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal.
Mr. Richmond has served in many professional leadership roles. He is a former President of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Bar Association and past member of the governing body of the Virginia State Bar. He has served on the Ethics Committee of the Virginia State Bar; as Chairman of the Real Property Section of the Virginia State Bar; on the faculty of the Virginia State Bar Professionalism Course; as Chairman of the Virginia State Bar Conference of Local Bar Associations; as President of the Virginia Commission on Women and Minorities in the Legal System; and as President of the Virginia Law Foundation and Chair of its Fellows Council.
His publications include The Virginia Homebuyer's Manual (Editor) and Real Estate Transactions In Virginia (Co-Editor).
Mr. Richmond also has served in many leadership roles in the community. He is a Founder and former Chairman of Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge and the Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge Foundation. He has served as President of Bloomfield, Inc., President of the Albemarle County Rotary Club, and President of Jefferson Elder Care, Inc., owner and operator of the nonprofit Mountainside Senior Living in Crozet, Virginia. He also has served as a board member of the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation, Rockywold Deephaven Camps, Inc., and Jefferson Area Board for the Aging. He is a director of BB&T Corporation of Virginia. He is a long time member of Christ Episcopal Church where he has served as a member of the Vestry and as Senior Warden.
Mr. Richmond has been recognized with an "A" rating in the Martindale-Hubbell Directory. He has been honored as a Fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, the Virginia Law Foundation, and the American Bar Foundation. He is included in Best Lawyers in America and has been named one of Virginia's 400 Best Lawyers. He was recognized in 2003 as the premier lawyer for Real Estate/ Construction in Virginia Business Legal Elite and in 2007 was the recipient of the Traver Scholar Award, awarded to the preeminent real estate lawyers in Virginia. He was also recognized as one of Charlottesville’s “Distinguished Dozen” by the Charlottesville Daily Progress in 2007.
